Brian Higginbotham, Utah State University Extension associate vice president, said Utah has a historical precedence of a pro-marriage culture, which has extended through families.“Our state is universally pretty pro-relationships and pro-marriage,” Higginbotham said.
“A lot of people feel like that’s something they’re supposed to do and there’s not necessarily a right time for that to happen.”And with more marriages, 8.6 compared to the national average of 6.8, there also comes more divorces.“Because people marry younger and there’s more marriages, there’s more divorces,” Birger said.
There are 1.7 single, college-educated women, ages 18-30 to every single man living outside the Salt Lake area, according to 2010-2011 census data calculated by TIME Labs.
There are 1.2 single, college-educated women between 31 and 45 for every single man in Utah with the number spiking up to 1.6 for women between the ages of 46 and 64.
For women who want a wider selection of men, the answer seems to be nixing the college education box.
Singles with no college education between the ages of 18 to 45 will find there is a higher percent of single men than women, about 1.2 men per woman, at least until the age of 46 when the number hikes past all the others to 3.6 single women for each man.
When it comes to being college educated and single the odds are in favor of men, especially those that live outside the Salt Lake City metro region.
“Men are more likely to remarry because they have more options to date down because there’s an oversupply of women.”According to Seal, about 40 percent of her clients are divorced.
Census Bureau data from 2014 shows females, 15 years and older, had a divorce rate of 14.1 percent with their male counterparts coming in at 8.9 percent.
However, numbers aside, some experts are more apt to focus on being able to enjoy the single life.
Bella De Paulo, psychology project scientist at the University of California, said she encourages people to be in a place they don't feel like being in a relationship is the main concern."Go out and about think about your whole life," De Paulo said.
